Why Winter Fishing is Special

November through March brings Campbell River's most peaceful fishing season. Winter Chinook salmon are resident feeder fish that stay in Discovery Passage year-round, actively feeding in deep water (200-300ft). These aren't migrating fish โ€” they live here.

Winter also brings excellent Dungeness crab fishing (season runs Nov-June), year-round lingcod, and multiple rockfish species. With zero summer crowds and our heated cabin on the 27' Conquest, you'll have the water to yourself. Book a half-day charter to experience massive bald eagle congregations and stunning winter scenery โ€” it's a photographer's dream.

โ„๏ธ OFF-SEASON VALUE

Winter fishing offers the same great rates as peak season but with zero crowds, peaceful waters, and incredible wildlife viewing. Fresh Dungeness crab pulled from pots adds a bonus to your trip!

"Winter is one of my favorite times to fish. The water is quiet, the eagles are everywhere, and the winter Chinook are some of the most aggressive feeders you'll encounter. There's something magical about a cold morning on the water when a big Chinook slams your line โ€” no crowds, just you and the fish."

What to Wear in Winter

  • Multiple Warm Layers

Dress VERY warmly. Wool or fleece base layers, down vest or fleece mid-layer, and insulated jacket. Layer up!

  • Waterproof Everything

Quality waterproof rain jacket and pants are essential. Winter rain is frequent โ€” stay dry to stay warm.

  • Warm Hat, Neck Gaiter, Gloves

Head, neck, and hand warmth are critical. Bring insulated gloves you can fish with and a warm toque or beanie.

  • Waterproof Boots

Insulated waterproof boots with non-slip soles. Keep feet warm and dry all day.

Winter Weather & Conditions

Winter brings cooler temperatures (2-8ยฐC) and frequent rain. But with proper layering and our heated cabin, you'll be comfortable all day. Dawn starts later in winter โ€” trips typically begin around 7-8am instead of 6am.

Most fishing happens in protected Discovery Passage, which stays calm even when outer coast is rough. Rain doesn't stop the fish โ€” winter Chinook feed actively in all weather. The heated cabin on our 27' Conquest provides a warm retreat between fishing action.

Winter Tip: The water is actually warmer than the air in winter! Once you're on the boat with the heated cabin and proper layers, you'll be surprised how comfortable winter fishing can be. Plus, you'll have the water to yourself!
