Conditions Report: July 29, 2026

Summer showed up right for us this morning. Air temperature at 20°C, a light east wind holding at 5 knots and barely gusting to 8, broken cloud overhead, and a clean 10 km of visibility. Sunrise came at 5:46 AM and the light stretched long into the evening, sunset not until 9:08 PM.

The water cooperated too. Seas ran 1 metre or less across Discovery Passage — a light chop over deep blue water, comfortable and fishable. We timed the morning around the flood tide, working the main channel while Seymour Narrows ripped hard above us toward 22 knots. The full moon, 100% illuminated, had the fish active, and the midday underfoot feeding window from 11:03 AM to 1:03 PM lined up neatly with the moving tide. Solunar rating for the day was Excellent.

The Catch

We kept it classic. Tomic plugs run deep on the downriggers, dropped all the way to 222 feet, trolled slow and steady through the channel. Water temp sat at 18.5°C — warm enough to keep the fish moving. The plugs did the work.

Mid-morning the rod loaded up. The reel gave line. A chrome bright 16-pounder came to the net, thick and fresh and fighting the whole way. Our angler was a returning guest, someone who had fished with us before and came back for another round on the Boston Whaler Montauk. Two Chinook were kept within the summer slot and five more were released to keep the run strong. His words afterward were simple enough: "Had a wonderful time."

What's Running in July

July is prime Chinook water around Campbell River. Most fish this time of year run 12 to 16 pounds, chrome bright and full of fight, with an always-present chance at a trophy 30-pounder. Under DFO Area 13 rules through late summer, Chinook must fall within a 62 to 80 cm slot to retain, with one per day — anything over 80 cm goes back to protect the big spawners. It is honest, sustainable fishing, and it keeps the run healthy for the seasons ahead. Coho move through as summer deepens, and the deep, tide-swept water of Discovery Passage keeps producing.
