Conditions Report: July 22, 2026

The morning began grey. We pushed off Coast Marina A Dock on the 6am departure under overcast skies, mild and still. By mid-morning the cloud had burned off to bright sun and the temperature climbed to 27°C. Wind was next to nothing, NE at 2 knots, and visibility ran clean out to 10km with the mountains standing sharp across the strait.

The sea was our friend today. Seas held to a metre or less, near flat calm with just a light ripple across the deep blue water. We fished the ebb through the morning, with low tide falling to 4.6 ft at 7:32 AM, which kept the bait moving down the main channel of Discovery Passage. Seymour Narrows runs hard, so we stayed south where the Boston Whaler Montauk's nimble hull let us work our spots in comfort.

The Catch

We kept it simple and effective. Trolling hoochies on the downriggers, gear set between 80 and 120 feet in warm 18°C surface water that had the fish sitting a touch shallower and feeding well. Slow and steady, about 2.5 knots. The First Quarter moon put the solunar rating at Good, with an early feeding window that lined up neatly with our troll.

Patricia was aboard for her first ever trip on the salt. When the rod loaded up, she stayed patient and played it clean, bringing a bright chrome salmon to the net. Healthy, fins intact, and a fish she'll talk about for a long while. The water was blue and the fish came up silver, and the grin said all there was to say.

What's Running in July

July is prime time on Discovery Passage. Chinook are the mainstay, running 12 to 16 lbs on average with a real chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder, and Coho arrive through the summer months to add to the mix. Under DFO Area 13 rules right now, Chinook fall under a 62 to 80cm slot limit, one per day, and anything over 80cm goes back to keep the run strong. Warm summer water keeps the fish active and often shallower, which makes for lively fishing and a great window for newcomers to learn.
