Conditions Report: August 26, 2026

A bluebird summer morning on the water is a rare enough gift that you notice it. Wednesday gave us one. Air temperature sat at 23°C under broken clouds with a clean 10 km of visibility. The wind stayed honest and light, out of the east at about 8 knots, and Environment Canada had Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage at 1 metre or less. The water off Cape Mudge came up blue-green with a soft chop, easy running from the moment we left Coast Marina.

The tide set the schedule. A morning ebb ran us toward a low at 11:35 AM, and Seymour Narrows peaked at 6.7 knots before easing into slack before flood at 11:36 AM. That softening current is when the bait stacks and the fish follow. We planned our best passes right into that window.

The Catch

We fished the historic Tyee waters off the southern tip of Quadra Island, trolling Tomic plugs at around 2.5 knots with the downriggers set deep at 220 feet. Surface water read 18.1°C, warm enough to push the schools down to the cooler layer, and that is exactly where we found them. A full moon at 98% and an Excellent solunar rating did the rest, with the underfoot feeding period landing 9:56 AM to 11:56 AM, right on top of the slack.

The boys made the most of it. Seann, Lyle, Chase, and Hamer came over from Alberta for their first day of Campbell River salmon fishing, a trip Mom booked as a gift. They landed a limit of Chinook, mostly in the honest 12-16 lb range with the best fish taping out at 16 pounds. We added Lingcod to the box and released four wild Coho clean and healthy. Nine salmon to the boat, and four grins all the way home.

What's Running in August

Late August is prime time in Campbell River. Chinook are the main event, and under current DFO Area 13 rules through August 31 we run a one per day slot limit of 62 to 80 cm, releasing anything over 80 cm to protect the big spawners. Most fish this season have run 12 to 16 pounds, with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder. Lingcod are open, wild Coho get released to keep the runs strong, and the fishing only gets better as we roll into September and the Tyee season, when the rules open up for bigger fish.
