FSC Daily Fishing Report - Wednesday, August 12, 2026
Two first-time guests booked a Campbell River fishing charter and each landed a chrome bright 78 cm Chinook salmon off Cape Mudge on an evening troll with Tomic plugs. A five-star solunar day in the Discovery Passage.
Conditions Report: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
August gave us one of its good ones. Clear sky, 22°C, and a light WNW wind at 11 km/h gusting to 24. Visibility ran a clean 10 km, sun up at 6:06 AM and setting at 8:45 PM, which put our half-day charter squarely in the evening light.
Out on the water it stayed comfortable through the whole session — seas one metre or less, a light chop off the WNW breeze. We ran the afternoon into the building flood, working toward the 6:20 PM high tide of 13.1 ft. Seymour Narrows went slack before ebb at 6:15 PM. That tide push into Cape Mudge is what stacks the bait and turns the salmon on, and today it did exactly that.
The Catch
We fished the historic Tyee waters off Cape Mudge, at the southern tip of Quadra Island, aboard the Boston Whaler Conquest. Technique was straight trolling with Tomic plugs, downriggers set at 169 feet, moving steadily through the tide line. Water temperature read a warm 18.2°C, which keeps the fish active.
Stephen and Donna came up from out east for their first time ever chasing Chinook, and Cape Mudge welcomed them properly. Each of them brought a chrome bright 78 cm fish up from the deep, the best pushing 16 lbs. Most were solid 12-16 lb feeders. On a new moon and a five-star solunar day, the bite lined right up with the tide. Three fish in the box, three released to keep the run healthy. As Stephen put it, the kids stayed paddle boarding at the lake while Mom and Dad fished the Discovery Passage.
What's Running in August
August is prime Chinook season in Campbell River. Fish are typically 12-16 lbs with a real shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder in the historic Tyee grounds. Under current DFO Area 13 rules for July 15 to August 31, anglers may keep one Chinook per day within a 62-80 cm slot, and anything over 80 cm goes back to protect the big spawners. That's a conservation win every time. Coho are also showing this time of year. Warm water and long evenings make the sunset bite one of the best windows of the day.
