September gave us honest working weather. Air temp sat at 20°C under a full deck of overcast cloud, with a light north wind at 11 km/h — around 6 knots — and 10 km of clean visibility. Sunrise came at 6:46 AM, sunset at 7:50 PM, giving Captain Bruce a comfortable window for the 11 AM midday departure aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk.

On the water, Discovery Passage ran seas of 1 metre or less, which felt like a light chop across green-blue water. The Environment Canada forecast called for NW 15 to 25 knots building overnight with fog patches into Wednesday morning, so the calmer midday window was the one to fish. Tides did the heavy lifting: slack before flood at Seymour Narrows landed at 10:32 AM, right as we set lines, and the flood built steadily toward the 5:03 PM high of 13.0 ft.

The Catch

We worked the red can with downriggers set 80 to 120 feet, trolling hoochies — plastic squid lures — behind flashers at about 2.5 knots. Water temp read a warm 17.3°C, keeping the fish active and holding higher in the column. As the flood pushed bait, the action turned electric. Three Chinook kept, four released. The fish of the day was a chrome bright 28-pounder, a genuine Tyee-season trophy, while most fish ran in the honest 12-16 lb range. The waning crescent moon paired with a Good solunar rating, and the morning feeding window flowed right into our slack-water start. Best of all, it was Kim's first time fishing ever — and she and Paul, visiting from White Rock, are already planning their next trip.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season in Campbell River, and it is the best month of the year for a shot at a truly big Chinook. Most fish still run in the reliable 12-16 lb range, but the chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder is real this time of year. Under DFO Area 13 rules, September allows two Chinook per day at a 62 cm minimum with no maximum size, so the big ones can come home. Coho are also in the mix through fall. Warm water and moving tides through Discovery Passage keep the bite honest.
