Conditions Report: September 1, 2026

Tyee season opened on a near-perfect evening. Air temperature held at 18°C under scattered clouds, with the lightest breath of wind out of the ENE at just 2 knots. Visibility stretched a clean 10 kilometres, the coast range showing sharp across Discovery Passage as the sun eased toward its 8:06 PM setting.

Out on the water it was near glass. The marine forecast called for seas of a metre or less, and it delivered. The tide was our friend — the flood built steadily through the afternoon toward the 7:37 PM high of 13.1 feet, pushing bait and holding fish. Slack before flood at Seymour Narrows had run at 3:00 PM, well ahead of the harder 7.4-knot ebb that followed. We fished the softer, productive water where the flood did its work.

The Catch

Captain Bruce ran the 4:00 PM evening trip aboard the 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk with Jay aboard solo — out to celebrate his wife's birthday the best way a fisherman knows. We worked The Hump, trolling Tomic plugs in blue glow on the downriggers at 80 to 120 feet, moving around 2.5 knots. As the light dropped through the evening, the blue glow earned its keep.

The water was calm and the light was gold and the fish came up silver. Chrome bright Chinook in the classic Tyee-season 12-16 lb range, fresh from the salt. A couple came home, and plenty more went back to keep the run strong. Water temp read 15°C — warm enough to keep the fish active and willing. The solunar rating was only Fair, so we leaned on tide timing instead, and it paid.

What's Running in September

September 1 marks the start of Tyee season in DFO Area 13. The daily limit moves to 2 Chinook per person, 62 cm minimum, with no maximum size — which means this is your best window all year for a genuine trophy Chinook in the 30-plus pound class. Most fish still run the honest 12-16 lb feeder range, but the big ones move through this month. Coho are also in the mix through the fall. It is one of the finest times to fish Campbell River waters.
