Conditions Report: Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Some summer mornings just line up. Tuesday was one of them. We pushed off Coast Marina A Dock on the early 6am departure under clear skies and a rising sun that broke the horizon at 5:44 AM. Air temp sat at a comfortable 21°C with a light southeast wind at 10 knots and visibility stretching out to 9 km.

Discovery Passage stayed easy all morning — seas at a metre or less, just a light chop on grey-green water. Environment Canada had called for fog patches later in the day, but we ran clean start to finish. The tide told us where to fish: high water came at 3:24 AM (11.9 ft) and dropped toward a low of 2.5 ft at 11:38 AM, with the Seymour Narrows slack before flood at 11:15 AM. With the flood set to run near 19 knots, we stayed south in the main channel where the bait was holding.

The Catch

We kept it simple and effective: trolling hoochies — plastic squid lures — behind flashers, running the downriggers at 100 feet. Water temp read a warm 18.4°C, which kept the fish up and feeding through the moving water. Brent, out on his very first trip, watched five salmon come to the boat over the morning — Chinook, coho, and a pink, a true mixed bag. Every fish went back healthy. The best of the day was a chrome-bright Chinook right at 15 pounds that came up silver and pulled hard against the drag. A full moon at 99% and an Excellent solunar rating had the fish moving, and the underfoot feeding window mid-morning lined up perfectly with our best action.

What's Running in July

Late July is prime time on Discovery Passage. Chinook are the main event, running 12-16 lbs through the summer with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-pounder if you're lucky. Coho are showing well now and will build through the fall, and this being an odd year, pinks are in the mix too. Under DFO Area 13 summer regulations, Chinook fall under a 62-80cm slot limit through August 31 — fish over the mark are released, which is exactly what we did with today's bigger salmon. Warm water and a strong tide make this some of the best salmon fishing on Vancouver Island.
