Conditions Report: July 21, 2026

Some days on Discovery Passage feel less like fishing and more like the water handing you exactly what you came for. Tuesday was one of those days.

The morning opened warm and soft. Air temperature climbed to 26°C under a blanket of overcast cloud — the kind of grey ceiling that keeps salmon looking up and feeding. Wind stayed light out of the east at just 4 knots, gusting no higher than 6. Visibility ran clean at 10 kilometres. With sunrise at 5:35 AM and the sun holding until 9:18 PM this deep into summer, there was no rush against the clock.

The marine forecast called for northwest wind of 10 to 20 knots building overnight, with fog patches forming after dark, but through our midday window the Strait stayed easy. Seas ran a metre or less. The water lay flat calm and blue-green across the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. High tide came at 12:27 PM, and slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows landed at 11:57 AM — right as we set our lines.

The Catch

Captain Trevor ran the 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk on the midday introductory trip, and today's angler was a young first-timer named Samuel, out with his grandfather for his very first day on the salt.

We worked the main channel with downriggers set deep at 200 feet, trolling steady. Water temperature read 18.3°C — warm and active, with the fish willing. A Good solunar rating backed it up. Five fish came to the boat: a mix of Chinook and Coho, all chrome bright. The Chinook ran in that honest 12-to-16-pound feeder range, and every fish was released clean under the current summer slot.

The rod bent, the drag ran, and the fish was there. Samuel cradled a silver Chinook for the photo with his hands shaking and a grin he couldn't hide. Grandpa stood right beside him. That's the kind of moment that stays.

What's Running in July

Midsummer on Discovery Passage means feeder Chinook and Coho are both on the menu. Chinook here run a reliable 12 to 16 pounds this time of year, with an outside shot at a trophy over 30. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, Chinook carry a 62-to-80-centimetre slot with a limit of one per day — anything over 80cm is released to protect the big spawners. Coho are open at two per day. Warm water keeps fish active and moving, and the deep downrigger program continues to produce.
