Some evenings the strait lays down flat and the whole world goes quiet. August 25 was one of those. Air temp held at 23°C under broken clouds, with light WNW wind at just 2 knots and clean visibility running well past 10km — you could count the peaks across the water.
The marine forecast called variable 5 to 15 knots with seas 1 metre or less, but where Captain Bruce fished it was closer to glassy. High tide came at 5:24 PM at 12.3 feet, and the slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows hit at 5:10 PM. With the Narrows current pushing 8.3 knots on the ebb, the plan was simple: stay south in Discovery Passage near the Green Can, work the softer water around the tide change, and let the fish come.
The Catch
The 4:00 PM departure aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk carried Mathew and Shiro, visitors from White Rock on their first Campbell River salmon trip. Captain Bruce set the downriggers at 80 to 120 feet and ran hoochies — plastic squid lures — behind flashers at a steady troll. Water temp was warm at 18.1°C, and the Chinook were up and active in the column.
The bite stayed steady through the evening. A couple of springs kept in the 62-80cm slot, eight more released clean, and the best fish pushing 10 lbs — chrome bright and fresh from the salt. Between passes we dropped down hunting lings on the structure. The light went gold, the rods kept nodding, and two first-time anglers got the full Campbell River evening.
What's Running in August
Late summer in Discovery Passage is prime Chinook water. Most fish this season are running 12-16 lbs, with an outside shot at a trophy 30-pounder. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, it's one Chinook per day in a 62-80cm slot, with anything over 80cm released to protect the big spawners. Come September 1, Tyee season opens the door to keeping larger fish. Lingcod are also fair game through mid-November for anglers working the bottom.
