A rainy morning Campbell River fishing charter turned into a great day on Discovery Passage — a limit of chrome Coho salmon and a bright 19 lb Chinook salmon.

Conditions Report: Thursday, July 2, 2026

Rain came down before the sun was even up. We left Coast Marina A Dock early, the water grey and soft under a low ceiling. Air temp sat at 15°C, feeling like 14, with moderate rain that never really let up. A light southeast wind held at 9 km/h, gusting to 17, and visibility stayed clean at 10 km.

The marine forecast for Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage called southeast 5 to 15 knots with seas one metre or less. That played out as light chop and an easy ride. The morning tide gave us plenty to work with — a high of 11.8 feet at 5:27 AM sliding down toward a big 2.5 foot low at 1:16 PM. We fished the tail of that flow into the slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows, timed for 7:07 AM. When the current settled, the bait settled, and the fish came up.

The Catch

We ran Tomic plugs on the downriggers, working between 80 and 120 feet. The water was warm and the fish were up and active. First came the Coho, chrome and scrappy, and we limited out on hatchery fish. Then a heavier shape came up on the rigger — a Chinook, bright and thick, that pulled the scale to 19 pounds. That was the fish of the day, released clean with every fin intact. The rest of the Chinook ran the honest summer size, 12 to 16 pounds. Our guest Laura, up from Florida for her first day on these waters, fished the whole morning in the rain and never stopped grinning. As she put it, it is fun fishing even in the rain.

What's Running in July

July is a strong month in Discovery Passage. Chinook are here in good numbers, mostly in the 12 to 16 pound range, with a real chance at a trophy over 30. Coho come on strong through summer and put up a lively fight for their size. Under DFO Area 13 rules, Chinook must be at least 62cm to keep, and from July 15 onward a slot limit applies with fish over 80cm released for conservation. Coho and hatchery-marked fish have their own limits, all of which we manage on the boat. It's warm-water summer fishing, and the fish are shallower and willing.
