Some afternoons on the water ask for patience. This one asked for a net.

The day opened overcast with the sun working its way through, air temperature at a comfortable 23°C and a light ENE breeze holding at 6 knots. Visibility was clean at 10 km. Captain Jason ran the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest out of Coast Marina for an afternoon Half Day charter, chasing the sunset bite toward the 7:55 PM close.

The sea cooperated. Environment Canada had seas running one metre or less, and that light chop kept the Whaler riding easy. Tides were the driver. Low water came at 7:55 AM at 2.8 feet, and the flood built steadily all afternoon toward the 3:20 PM high of 12.5 feet. That moving water is what pushes bait tight to structure, and it did exactly that near the green can.

The Catch

We fished it the classic Campbell River way — trolling a 602 Tomic plug at a steady clip with downriggers set between 80 and 120 feet. With water temperature at 17.7°C, the fish were holding higher in the column than usual, and the plug found them.

The rod loaded up and stayed down. What came to the net was a chrome-bright 28-pound Chinook, a genuine Tyee-class fish, fins intact and fresh from the salt. Four Chinook came aboard on the day, but that big hen was the story. A waning crescent moon and a Good solunar rating had the fish active, and the minor feeding window around midday lined up neatly with the building flood.

Best of all was who was there for it. Chelsea, visiting from Vancouver on her very first charter, shared the back deck with three generations of laughter. One fish, and a memory that will outlast the season.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season on Discovery Passage, and it's the best window of the year for a truly big Chinook. Under DFO Area 13 rules for September, the limit is 2 Chinook per person with a 62 cm minimum and no maximum size — meaning trophy fish can come home. Most Chinook this time of year run 12 to 16 pounds, solid, hard-fighting salmon, with a real chance at a fish pushing 30 pounds and beyond. Today's 28-pounder is exactly why anglers circle September on the calendar.
