Three generations from Washington State booked a Campbell River fishing charter for their first day on the water together, landing chrome Chinook and Coho salmon off Cape Mudge in Tyee season.

Conditions Report: Sunday, September 20, 2026

There's a particular quiet to an overcast morning on Discovery Passage. No harsh light, no wind to speak of, just grey sky and calm water and the hum of the downriggers. That was the scene as the Boston Whaler Conquest slipped away from Coast Marina A Dock at first light.

Air temperature held at 13°C with a light NNW breeze at just 6 km/h, gusting to 12. Environment Canada called northwest 10 knots for Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage, with seas one metre or less — and that's precisely what we found. Flat calm to light chop, comfortable running the whole way south. The tide told the morning's story. Low water came at 7:05 AM at 4.7 feet, building toward a 3:09 PM high of 12.2 feet. At Seymour Narrows, slack before flood landed at 6:54 AM, and the ebb ran hard after, peaking near 6.1 knots. We rode the tail of that ebb down to Cape Mudge.

The Catch

Cape Mudge sits off the southern tip of Quadra Island — historic Tyee water, where the current sweeps bait along the tideline. We set hoochies behind flashers, downriggers down at 180 feet, and let the Army Truck do the work. It earned its keep. The rods stayed busy through the morning. Six salmon in the box, eight released, with the best Chinook taping out at 14 lbs — chrome bright and thick, right in the Tyee-season pocket. Coho joined the mix too, silver and full of fight. Warm 16°C water had the fish active, and a Good solunar rating under a first quarter moon lined the dawn feeding window right up with our start. The morning belonged to David, Mike, and Mo — three generations from Washington State, fishing Campbell River together for the very first time. Grandfather, father, son. Three sets of hands on three rods. That's a day none of them will forget.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season on Discovery Passage, one of the finest windows of the year. Chinook typically run 12 to 16 lbs right now, with a genuine shot at a trophy pushing 30 pounds or more. Coho are still around, silver and aggressive. Under DFO Area 13 rules, anglers may keep two Chinook per day at a 62cm minimum with no maximum size limit — meaning the big ones are fair game this month. It's a great time to be on the water, and the warm water temperatures are keeping the fish feeding well.
