FSC Daily Fishing Report - Sunday, October 4, 2026
A calm fall afternoon on Discovery Passage delivered first-timer Christopher a chrome 13-lb salmon on this Campbell River fishing charter. Captain Bruce worked the Seymour Narrows flood tide aboard the Boston Whaler Montauk.
Conditions Report: October 4, 2026
A soft fall afternoon on Discovery Passage. The air sat at 15ยฐC under broken clouds, with the morning fog patches long since dissipated and visibility stretching a clean 10km. Wind was barely a whisper โ the marine forecast called for northwest 5 to 15 knots and the water never got past a ripple.
Seas ran 1 metre or less out of Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage, effectively flat calm. We fished the afternoon flood building toward the 2:00 PM slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows, with the day's high at 2:32 PM reading 13.0 ft. The current pushed around 2.7 knots on the flood, stacking bait into the back eddies where the fish were holding.
The Catch
We kept it simple and reliable: trolling hoochies โ plastic squid lures โ behind flashers, running the downriggers between 100 and 180 feet at a steady troll. Water temp read a warm 14.6ยฐC, keeping the fish active and willing.
Aboard the nimble Boston Whaler Montauk, Captain Bruce put first-time angler Christopher, visiting from Brandon, right in the zone. As the current eased toward slack, the rod loaded hard and the drag went singing. A chrome 13-pounder came to the net. Three in the box, three released. The Last Quarter moon gave us a Good solunar day, and the evening feeding window lined up with the softening tide. As Christopher put it, "the fishing was exciting and fully enjoyable."
What's Running in October
Fall on Vancouver Island means fish in the shallows and a mix of species working through Discovery Passage. We're seeing good action on the flood tides through Seymour Narrows, with salmon in the 8 to 15 lb range the norm and a shot at something bigger. DFO Area 13 regulations apply โ we fish responsibly and release what needs releasing to keep the runs strong. Warm water temps this season have the fish holding a touch shallower and feeding hard.
