A group of fourteen from Alberta booked a two-day Campbell River fishing charter to celebrate Luca's 18th birthday, landing 14 Chinook salmon on Tomic plugs through Discovery Passage.

Grey skies, steady rain, and calm water. That was the scene for day two of a multi-day group charter out of Campbell River. Air temp held at 13°C, feeling closer to 12°C under a full overcast, with light rain falling most of the morning and visibility a clean 10 km. Winds were calm early out of the north.
The marine forecast for Discovery Passage called for light wind becoming southeast 5 to 15 knots with seas of 1 metre or less — flat, comfortable water all morning. Tides ran a 6:33 AM high at 11.7 ft down to a 12:27 PM low at 5.6 ft. Seymour Narrows showed a strong ebb near 5.5 knots, with slack before ebb at 7:22 AM. We worked the water either side of the morning tide change, and the current did its job pushing bait through.
The Catch
We kept it simple and effective. Tomic 602 plugs ran at 170 feet on the downriggers, trolling steady through the green can. Water temp was a warm 17.9°C, which had the Chinook active and willing. Across four boats and fourteen anglers, the group put 14 Chinook in the boxes and released another 20 — the larger fish sent back inside the summer slot to keep the run strong. Most fish ran 12 to 16 lbs, chrome bright and hard fighting, with the best of the day pushing 17 lbs. Ernesto had arranged the whole thing to celebrate his son Luca's 18th birthday — his O-Fish-Ally — and a crew of first-timers found out fast that a little rain means nothing when the rods are loading up.
What's Running in August
Late August in Campbell River means summer Chinook feeding hard through Discovery Passage before the fall push. Fish this time of year typically run 12 to 16 lbs with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-pounder. DFO Area 13 rules through August 31 hold Chinook at one per day within a 62 to 80 cm slot, with anything over 80 cm released — which is exactly why we sent so many big ones back.
