A Campbell River fishing charter evening on Discovery Passage delivered chrome bright Chinook salmon on the flood tide. Four springs kept, ten released, best at 14 lbs.

Some of the best fishing days here don't start at dawn. They start in the afternoon and run into the long summer light. Sunday was one of those. We pushed out from Coast Marina A Dock aboard the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest with the sun still high and a light WNW breeze on the water.
Air temp held at 16°C under scattered clouds, with wind out of the west-northwest around 12 km/h and gusts to 25. Visibility was clean at 10 km, though the marine forecast promised fog banks forming late overnight and clearing Monday morning. Seas ran a metre or less — a comfortable light chop. The tide was the story: after the afternoon low of 6.0 ft at 1:57 PM, the water was building toward a big evening high of 13.1 ft at 9:09 PM. At Seymour Narrows, slack before flood came at 3:17 PM and that flood pushed all evening. Sunset was set for 9:02 PM.
The Catch
We ran out to the green can and set Tomic plugs on the downriggers, 80 to 120 feet down at about 2.5 knots. It's a classic Campbell River program and it earned its keep. As the flood tide built, it stacked bait tight along the can and the Chinook were right in the middle of it. The rods started tapping, then popping wire. Four chrome springs came to the box and ten more went back — fish running true to summer size, 12 to 16 lbs, with the best of the day at 14 lbs. The water was warm at 18.4°C, the fish active and up in the column. Michael brought the boys — Nathan and Zach — for their first trip, and the look on their faces holding those bright fish said everything.
What's Running in August
August is prime Chinook season in Discovery Passage. Fish run typical summer size, 12 to 16 lbs, with an outside shot at a trophy pushing 30 pounds or more. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, it's one Chinook per day within a 62 to 80cm slot — anything over 80cm goes back, which keeps the run strong for years to come. We also see plenty of wildlife this time of year: humpbacks, eagles and seals working the same bait we do. Warm water keeps the fish shallow and active, which makes for lively trolling.
