September mornings on Discovery Passage have a way of rewarding an early start. Today the sun broke at 6:45 AM under a sky of broken cloud, with the air sitting at a comfortable 19°C and a light easterly breeze at around 8 knots. Visibility was clean out to 10 km — no fog to work around, just clear water and open channel.

The marine forecast called northwest 10 to 15 knots with seas of 1 metre or less, and that's roughly what we found: a manageable light chop that never interfered with the troll. The tide was the story. After a nighttime high, the water was dropping toward a hard low of 2.6 feet at 9:00 AM, building again toward the afternoon high of 12.7 feet at 3:59 PM. We stacked our best passes around the 8:36 AM slack before flood at Seymour Narrows, which is exactly the window that concentrates bait through the passage.

The Catch

Captain Bruce ran the 6 AM departure aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with Bonnie and Bruce, a party of two on a 4-hour introductory trip. We trolled Tomic plugs, the 602 pattern, down 80 to 120 feet on the downriggers at around 2.5 knots. As we came into the slack and the early flood, the current pushed bait through the channel and the fish turned on — right in step with a Good solunar rating and a major feeding window from 7:30 to 9:30 AM.

Four Chinook came to the boat, and all four were released. The standout was a chrome-bright hen that pushed 23 pounds, a proper Tyee-season fish, with the rest running in the solid 12-16 lb feeder range. Water temp of 17.4°C kept the fish active and higher in the column.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season in Campbell River, and it's the time of year everyone circles on the calendar. Under DFO Area 13 rules, Chinook retention opens up from September 1st onward — two per day, 62 cm minimum, with no maximum size. That means a trophy fish like today's 23-pounder can legally be kept if an angler chooses, though many opt to release them, as our guests did. Expect Chinook in the 12-16 lb range through the month, with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder for those who put in the time.
