Two anglers holding four chrome bright Chinook salmon on the dock at Campbell River, Discovery Passage

Conditions Report: September 5, 2026

Some days the coast makes it easy. Saturday was one of them. The water on Discovery Passage lay flat and green, the air sat at a comfortable 14°C under a solid overcast, and the north wind barely registered at 1 km/h. Visibility ran a clean 10 km — no fog, no haze, just an open channel and working rod tips.

The marine forecast called for seas 1 metre or less, and out on the water it delivered flat calm. Low water came at 7:55 AM at 2.8 ft, and the tide built steadily all morning toward the 2:28 PM high at 12.1 ft. That rising flood pushed bait through the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island, and we timed our passes to it. Seymour Narrows slack ran through 1:28 PM, and the hour either side of the current change did the heavy lifting.

The Catch

Captain Bruce ran the midday introductory trip aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with Dwight and Tanya, a party of two. We trolled hoochies and Tomic plugs on the downriggers, running 80 to 120 feet at around 2.5 knots. The water was warm at 17.2°C, which kept the fish up in the column and active.

The fish came up silver and strong. Four bright Chinook made it into the boat over the course of the trip, chrome fresh and mostly in that honest 12 to 16 lb class — good clean early Tyee season salmon. With a Good solunar rating and the underfoot feeding window building into the afternoon, the bite lined up right where we hoped it would. Dwight and Tanya wore the grins to prove it.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season in Campbell River, and it's one of the best windows of the year. As of September 1st, DFO Area 13 opened the Chinook limit to two per day with no maximum size, which means every fish that hits the line carries a shot at a genuine trophy. Most fish run 12 to 16 lbs, but a 30-plus pounder is always a possibility this time of year. Coho are also in the mix through the fall. Warm water and active fish make September a rewarding month for anglers of every experience level.
