A bright late-August morning on Discovery Passage delivered eight Chinook to the boat. See what this Campbell River fishing charter landed near the green can and why September's Tyee season is one to book now.

The sun came up clean over Discovery Passage this morning, and the water was ready. Air temp of 16°C, feeling like 15°C, with a light NNW wind at just 11 km/h (6 knots). A few high clouds, clear 10 km visibility, and sunrise at 6:31 AM laying soft light across the passage. The marine forecast held with seas one metre or less — a gentle chop and nothing more. On the water it was the kind of late-August morning that makes you glad you got up early.
The tides gave us a working canvas. High water hit at 5:45 AM at 11.9 feet, and we fished the ebb as it pulled toward the noon low. Through Seymour Narrows the ebb ran a heavy 18.6 knots, so we stayed south in the passage and let the current push bait past the green can. Slack before flood was set for 12:52 PM. A Full Moon at 98% illuminated put the solunar forecast at Excellent, and the morning feeding window lined up right with our first passes.
The Catch
We ran the 4-hour introductory trip aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with James, up from Mississippi for his first Pacific salmon. Trolling Tomic plugs on the downriggers at 80 to 120 feet, we held around 2.5 knots and worked the green can as the ebb built. Water temp read a moderate 10°C.
The fish were on. Eight Chinook came to the boat over four hours — seven released clean under the summer slot rules, and one chrome bright keeper in the 12 to 14 lb range for the box. Every fish came up bright and pulled hard. For a first-timer, James found the rhythm quick. The rod bent, the drag sang, and the fish was there. That grin when the salmon came up silver said it all.
What's Running in August
Late August is solid Chinook country in Campbell River. Feeder fish run mostly 12 to 16 lbs, with a chance at a trophy over 30 for the patient angler. From July 15 to August 31, DFO Area 13 runs a 62-80cm slot with one per day, so fish over 80cm go back. Come September 1, the Tyee season opens with room to keep bigger fish — one of the most anticipated stretches of the year here on Vancouver Island.
