FSC Daily Fishing Report - Saturday, August 15, 2026
A Campbell River fishing charter delivered a flat-calm evening of chrome Chinook salmon for a visiting family off the Cumberland bike trails. Three kept, three released, best fish 16 lbs on Tomic plugs off the green can.
Conditions Report: Saturday, August 15, 2026
Some evenings the water gives you everything. This was one of them. We pushed off from Coast Marina for an afternoon-into-evening half day, and Discovery Passage was flat calm — glass in the lee, blue-green and clean.
Air temp held at 16°C under a clear sky. Wind was almost nothing, WNW at 2 knots gusting to 5, and visibility ran a clean 10km-plus with the morning fog banks long gone. Seas were a metre or less. The tide built toward the evening high at 7:25 PM at 13.4 feet, and at Seymour Narrows the flood was ripping to nearly 22 knots — so we stayed south and let the current carry bait our way. When slack before ebb landed at 7:29 PM, the bite firmed right up.
The Catch
We kept it simple. Tomic 602 plugs down at 200 feet on the downriggers, trolling around 2.5 knots, working the drop off the green can. Water read a warm 18°C, which kept the fish active. The result was three Chinook to the box and three released, all chrome bright and running 12 to 16 pounds, with the best fish going a solid 16.
The crew made the day. Jason, Sarah, and their two girls, Rivers and Summit, came off the mountain bike trails in Cumberland and traded the dirt for saltwater. Both parents are PE teachers, and the kids took to it fast. As Sarah put it, the girls loved playing with the plugs and all the different colors. They picked every one that went down. The waxing crescent moon and a Good solunar rating lined up with our dusk slack to seal it.
What's Running in August
August is peak summer Chinook season in Campbell River. Fish are running mostly 12 to 16 pounds, with a real chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder for the patient angler. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, it's one Chinook per day within a 62 to 80cm slot — anything over 80cm gets released to protect the big spawners. Coho are also showing as summer rolls on. It's a fantastic time of year to get out, with long light and generally calm evenings.
