A first-time angler from Australia landed a 24-lb Chinook — the biggest of the season — on a Campbell River fishing charter in Discovery Passage. Fifteen Chinook to the boat, all released.

Conditions Report: Monday, June 15, 2026

June gave us one of its better afternoons. The air sat at 22°C under broken clouds, with a light WNW wind around 9 km/h (5 knots) and clean 10 km visibility. The water was a quiet blue-grey, just a light chop on the surface, seas holding at a metre or less. Sunrise had come at 5:11 AM and sunset wouldn't arrive until 9:31 PM, so the evening stretched long and easy in front of us.

The tide shaped everything. We worked the build toward the 7:19 PM high tide of 13.4 feet, with slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows landing at 6:56 PM. A new moon hung overhead, and the solunar forecast read Excellent. The moonrise minor feeding window opened at 6:02 PM, right as the slack settled and the light went soft. When the conditions line up like that, you fish with confidence.

The Catch

We trolled the red can in Discovery Passage aboard the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest, running hoochies behind flashers on the downriggers. The Army Truck pattern did the work. We set the gear deep — 220 feet on the riggers — into 16°C water that had the fish active and feeding.

Fifteen Chinook came to the boat, every one released to keep the run strong. The standout was a chrome-bright 24-pounder, the biggest Chinook we've landed all season. Most of our fish run 12 to 16 lbs, so this one was a gift. Owen, fishing for the first time and visiting from Australia with his family, held the rod when it loaded up. The drag screamed, the fish dug deep, and he stayed patient. His family said it was the best day of his life. We believe them.

What's Running in June

June is prime Chinook season in Campbell River. Feeder Chinook are thick through Discovery Passage, mostly in that healthy 12-16 lb range, with a real chance at a trophy fish pushing 24 lbs or better, as today proved. Under DFO Area 13 regulations, Chinook must measure at least 62cm to retain, and we always fish within the current Fishery Notices. With warm water and active fish, the summer bite is on. Lingcod and rockfish are also open now for those wanting a mixed day on the bottom.
