FSC Daily Fishing Report - Monday, July 6, 2026
A warm July morning on Discovery Passage delivered fourteen Chinook to the boat for two first-time anglers from Germany. This Campbell River fishing charter with Captain Trevor produced a chrome bright 15lb Chinook salmon and a day one guest called the best of his life.
=== Conditions Report: Monday, July 6, 2026 === The morning opened warm and grey. Air temperature climbed toward 25°C under an overcast sky, with a light east wind at just 5 knots and 10 km of visibility across Discovery Passage. Sunrise came at 5:19 AM and laid soft light on the water. The marine forecast held northwest wind at 10 to 15 knots with seas a metre or less, so we fished comfortable light chop the whole trip.
The tide set the table. Low water ran 8.1 ft at 5:42 AM, with slack before flood at Seymour Narrows at 4:49 AM. We worked the building flood through the morning toward the 9:30 AM high of 9.5 ft. That current pushed bait into the main channel and the bite followed. A last quarter moon at 59 percent lit gave us a Good solunar rating, with the major feeding window lining up nicely against our early start.
=== The Catch === Captain Trevor ran the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk out of Coast Marina A Dock on the 6 AM departure. Aboard were two first-time anglers visiting from Germany, both named Thorsten. We trolled hoochies, the plastic squid lures, behind flashers on the downriggers set to 100 feet. Water temperature read 17.9°C, warm enough to hold active fish up in the column.
The fish were on it. Fourteen Chinook came to the boat over the morning, chrome bright and healthy. Four were kept within the slot and ten released clean to keep the run strong. The best fish taped out to a solid 15 pounds and came up bright silver in the green water. One of the Thorstens called it the best day of his life. That is a hard thing to top.
=== What's Running in July === July is prime Chinook season on Discovery Passage. Most fish this time of year run 12 to 16 pounds, with a genuine chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder. From July 15 through August 31, DFO Area 13 runs a 62 to 80 cm slot limit for Chinook at one per day, so any fish over 80 cm must be released. We frame those releases as a good thing, keeping the run strong for seasons to come. Coho begin showing later in summer, adding to the action.
=== Book Your Trip === The Montauk is nimble and perfect for two anglers targeting specific water, a classic open boat experience. With free parking at the south end of Tyee Plaza and departures at 6 AM, 11 AM, and 4 PM, it is easy to get on the water.
