Grey and quiet is how the morning opened on Discovery Passage. Sunrise came at 5:43 AM under a blanket of overcast cloud, with the air holding at 17°C and only the faintest breath of ENE wind at 1 to 2 knots. The marine forecast for Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage called for southeast wind 5 to 15 knots with seas one metre or less, but out at the green can the water lay flat and calm, green and cold, visibility a clean 10 kilometres to the far shore.

We worked the tide through the morning toward the afternoon slack. Low water dropped to 2.7 feet at 11:04 AM, and Seymour Narrows ran a hard ebb before slacking before flood at 10:35 AM. That moving water is a gift — it pushes bait through the passage and lights the fish up. The solunar rating was Fair, but the underfoot feeding window from 9:13 to 11:13 AM lined up well with our best action.

The Catch

We ran classic Campbell River tackle: Tomic plugs on the downriggers at 120 feet, trolling around 2.5 knots. Water temperature was a warm 18.3°C, so the Chinook were active and shallow enough to hunt. The plugs did the work, swimming steady and rhythmic behind the boat.

Two chrome bright Chinook came to the boat and four more were released clean and healthy. The best fish taped 78cm — right around 16 pounds, the trophy of the day. Most fish ran 12 to 16 pounds, solid summer feeders. But the number that mattered wasn't on the scale. It was three: Papa, his son Justin, and young Seth, a family from Canmore learning the ropes together. Papa called the big fish while the boy held the rod, hands shaking, and afterward Justin told us Seth said it was the best day of his life.

What's Running in July

Summer is Chinook season in Campbell River, and the fish are here. In DFO Area 13, from July 15 to August 31, the limit is one Chinook per day within a 62 to 80cm slot — anything over 80cm must be released. That's why bigger fish go back, and it keeps the run strong for the years ahead. Expect most fish in the 12 to 16 pound range this time of year, with a genuine chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder. Coho are beginning to show as well as we move deeper into summer.
