Conditions Report: August 3, 2026

Some days on Discovery Passage look like they were painted for a postcard. Today was one of them. Clear sky overhead, 21°C, and a light ENE wind at just 6 km/h barely stirring the surface. Visibility ran out past 10 km with the mountains standing sharp on the horizon. The water was deep blue and cold and moving with the tide.

We fished the midday window, working the ebb as it built down toward the 2:27 PM low of 7.4 ft, after the morning high of 10.1 ft at 9:37 AM. Seymour Narrows had run hard on the flood earlier, hitting 15 knots, with slack before ebb at 10:15 AM. Seas stayed at a metre or less through our trip — light chop, no whitecaps. The marine forecast had northwest wind building to 20 to 30 knots tonight, but our afternoon on the water was calm and friendly.

The Catch

The plan was simple and it worked. We trolled Tomic plugs at 100 feet on the downriggers, running a steady pace along the current lines through the main channel. Water temp read a warm 18.6°C, which kept the fish active and holding in that mid-column. The bite came steady. Four fish in the box and four released, with the best going a solid 18 pounds — chrome bright, thick, and shining as it came up in the sun. Most were healthy feeders in the 12-16 lb range.

Rolf was aboard for his first trip with us, and he got the full show. The rod loaded up, the drag sang, and the fish was there. The look on a first-timer's face when a bright salmon rolls up beside the boat never gets old.

What's Running in August

August is prime Chinook time in Campbell River. The fish are moving through Discovery Passage and staging near Seymour Narrows, mostly solid 12-16 lb feeders with a chance at a trophy 30-pounder mixed in. Under DFO Area 13 summer regulations we're on the 62-80cm slot limit, one Chinook per day, with anything over 80cm released to keep the run strong. It's a good time to be on the water, and the warm water keeps the fish active and feeding.
