Conditions Report: July 20, 2026
Some mornings the Passage gives freely. Monday was one of them. We pushed off from Coast Marina in that soft grey light after the 5:34 AM sunrise, the sky a smooth blanket of overcast cloud and the air already warm at 25°C. A light easterly breeze at 5 km/h barely creased the surface.
Discovery Passage ran flat calm, seas a metre or less, the water blue-green and quiet. Visibility stretched a clean 10 km with the coastal mountains standing sharp across the strait. The morning tide told the story: low water at 5:53 AM gave way to a building flood toward a 10:37 AM high, and the hour ahead of the Seymour Narrows slack at 10:49 AM was the productive window we planned around.
The Catch
We trolled hoochies and Tomic plugs on the downriggers, set 80 to 120 feet. Water temp read a warm 18.1°C, which pushed the bait and fish shallow, so we worked the upper end of the range. The First Quarter moon and a Good solunar rating kept things active, and the flood push did the rest.
Four chrome bright Chinook came to the boat, healthy summer feeders in that solid 12-16 lb class, fins intact and fresh from the salt. Our anglers, four young men visiting from Germany, were a genuine dream team. Patient hands, good instincts, and four grins that said it all. Four rods, four fish, one flat-calm morning.
What's Running in July
July is prime Chinook season on Discovery Passage. Most fish run in the 12-16 lb range this time of year, with a real shot at a trophy 30-pounder. Coho start showing through summer as well. Under DFO Area 13 rules, from July 15 to August 31 the Chinook limit is one per day within a 62-80cm slot, meaning anything over 80cm gets released to protect the run. It's a rule we're glad to follow. A big fish returned to the water is a story too.
