Conditions Report: Friday, September 4, 2026

Some evenings don't announce themselves. Friday was one of those. Grey sky, moderate rain falling steady, air temp sitting at 13°C, and a low ceiling pressing down on the Passage. The wind was barely there — light out of the north, a knot at most — and the water lay flat and green under it.

Marine conditions were soft all session. The Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage forecast called for light wind becoming northwest 5 to 15 knots with seas a metre or less, and that's exactly what we got. Visibility ran a clean 10 km. Tides gave us a big evening high of 12.9 ft building toward 9:08 PM, with Seymour Narrows ebbing north around 3.5 knots and slack before flood at 6:23 PM. We built our evening around that slack.

The Catch

We ran the Boston Whaler Conquest out to the Hump on Discovery Passage. Trolling hoochies behind flashers, downriggers set 80 to 120 feet, speed around 2.5 to 3 knots to keep the gear rolling. The Army Truck hoochie did the work — a green and black pattern that has earned its reputation here.

The fish were chrome bright and fresh. Mostly solid feeder Chinook in the 12 to 16 lb range, with the best of them pushing 15 lbs. The bite lined up with the slack before flood and the Last Quarter moon's evening feeding window, which ran into the changing light. Three fish kept, eight released to keep the run strong. Glen, Helen and their crew came up from Vancouver for their first time out, and they got the full Campbell River experience — hooked on the first cast, a deck full of fish, and a long ride home worth talking about.

What's Running in September

September means Tyee season on Discovery Passage. Under DFO Area 13 regulations from September 1 onward, the limit moves to two Chinook per day with a 62 cm minimum and no maximum size — which means a trophy fish can come home with you. Most of what we're seeing runs 12 to 16 lbs, honest feeder Chinook, but this is the season for a real shot at a 30-plus pound Tyee. Warm water this week, reading 17.3°C, is keeping fish active and a touch shallower. Coho are also around as fall settles in.
