Conditions Report: Friday, September 11, 2026

The morning came in soft and grey. Air temp sat at 17°C, feeling like 16°C, under a solid overcast that never quite broke. Wind was almost nothing — light out of the north at 4 km/h — and the water lay flat, green and cold, with 10 km of visibility. We ran out of Coast Marina at first light, sunrise at 6:51 AM, and the water gave us glass most of the way.

Marine conditions were as easy as they come. Seas ran a metre or less, glass to a soft ripple. Environment Canada had northwest wind building to 10 to 20 knots later in the day, with strong outflow warnings through the mainland inlets, so we fished the early window hard. Tides framed the day — low at 12:57 AM, a high at 5:08 AM, and a midday low at 12:02 PM. Seymour Narrows ran a hard flood, and we worked the moving water off the reef.

The Catch

We trolled Tomic plugs on the downriggers, set down to 180 feet in 16.4°C water. Warm water means active fish, and Grant's Reef proved it. The rods kept going down. Seven Chinook and eight Coho came to the boat, with the best salmon a thick 19-pounder — chrome and heavy. Most fish ran the seasonal 12-16 lb range. Then an oversize halibut came up big off the reef. It got admired by the whole crew, photographed, and released back where it belongs. The new moon had the fish feeding, and the Excellent solunar window lined up with the midday tide change. Shane brought his mom and dad up from Alberta, and watching the family work Tyee-season fish side by side made the morning.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season on Discovery Passage, and it's the best time of year to tangle with a big Chinook. Under DFO Area 13 rules, the daily limit is two Chinook per person from September 1 with a 62 cm minimum and no maximum size — meaning a genuine trophy can be kept. Most fish this month run 12-16 lbs, with a real shot at a 30-plus pound Tyee. Coho are running strong through the fall as well. The halibut we caught today was oversize and released, as required. It all adds up to a rich, varied fishery this time of year.
