Conditions Report: August 7, 2026

Some days the ocean just gives you everything. Friday delivered a bluebird summer sky, 23°C air, and a light northwest breeze around 10 km/h with gusts to 13. Visibility ran a clean 10 kilometres — the treeline on Quadra Island stood sharp against the blue.

Out on Discovery Passage the seas sat at a metre or less through the midday window, just a light chop on blue water. The marine forecast promised northwest winds building to 20 to 30 knots overnight, with fog banks forming near midnight, but our 11 AM to 3 PM trip caught the calm heart of the day. Tides worked in our favour too. Low water hit 2.6 ft at 8:17 AM and built toward the 3:48 PM high, while up at Seymour Narrows the current laid down toward the 3:04 PM slack before ebb. Moving water, pushing bait, feeding fish.

The Catch

Captain Trevor ran the nimble 17' Boston Whaler Montauk, working the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra with classic Tomic plugs on the downriggers at 160 feet. Trolling speed sat around 2.5 knots. Water temp read a warm 18.2°C, and the fish were active.

Aboard were Quentin and Benno, a father and son visiting from Germany and fishing for the very first time. Then the rod loaded, the drag ran, and a young angler brought a chrome bright 15lb Chinook to the surface — silver, fresh, and heavy in his hands. First time out, first real fish. As Benno put it, it made his son very happy. One kept in the slot, two released. The last quarter moon and a Good solunar rating had the fish moving right through our window.

What's Running in August

August is peak Chinook season in Campbell River. Most fish run 12 to 16 pounds, with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-pounder if the day lines up. Under DFO Area 13 rules from July 15 to August 31, anglers may keep one Chinook per day in the 62 to 80 cm slot, with anything over 80 cm released for conservation. Coho are also showing this time of year. The warm water and long daylight make for excellent, active fishing.
