Conditions Report: August 21, 2026
Some mornings the water just gives. Friday was one of them. We pushed off from Coast Marina A Dock on the 6am departure under a sky already bright and cloudless, sun up at 6:19 AM and climbing. By mid-morning the air had warmed to 28°C with a light east wind at 5 knots. Visibility ran a clean 10km — you could see the treeline across Discovery Passage sharp and unbroken.
Marine conditions matched. Seas held at a metre or less with a light chop over calm water. The forecast hinted at northwest winds and fog banks forming overnight, but the early bite saw none of it. The morning low came at 7:16 AM at 4.4 feet, with the flood building behind it and the current through Seymour Narrows running a workable 1.4 knots. We timed our passes to the moving water.
The Catch
We trolled hoochies — plastic squid lures — run behind flashers on the downriggers, set between 80 and 120 feet and pulled at around 2.5 knots to give the lure its roll. The flood pushes bait through the Narrows and the Chinook stack up behind it to feed. The First Quarter moon at 59% carried a Good solunar rating, and the morning feeding window lined up neatly with our early passes. Water read a warm 17.9°C, which kept the fish active and holding higher in the column. Renee, up from Vancouver for her very first day of salmon fishing, handled her first Chinook with steady hands. The rod bent, the drag ran, and the fish came up bright. We released plenty and kept a couple of clean feeders in the 12-16 lb range.
What's Running in August
Late August in Campbell River is prime Chinook season. Most fish come in the 12-16 lb range, with a real shot at a trophy 30-pounder holding in the tide. Under DFO Area 13 summer rules, Chinook are one per day within a 62-80cm slot through August 31, meaning anything over 80cm goes back to keep the run strong. Come September the Tyee season opens up and bigger fish can be retained. Coho are also filling in through the late summer and fall. The Narrows and Cape Mudge remain the go-to water this time of year.
