Overcast Calm and a Morning Flood Set Up the Chinook Bite
Flat 0.0m water, overcast skies, and a building morning flood have resident winter Chinook feeding hard in Discovery Passage.
Today's Conditions on Discovery Passage
We've got a classic late-October setup here in Campbell River this morning. It's sitting at 9ยฐC under a solid blanket of overcast skies, with northwest winds drifting in at a gentle 11 km/h. Best of all, wave height is reading flat at 0.0m โ you could set a coffee cup on the gunwale and not lose a drop. The tide is just coming off the morning slack and building into the flood, which is exactly the window we want for feeding winter Chinook.
Why the Fish Are Here
Right now, local resident winter Chinook are the name of the game, and they're feeding hard through Discovery Passage and the surrounding inside waters. These are chunky fish in the 8 to 15 lb range โ not the big summer tyees, but aggressive, hard-fighting, and absolutely delicious table fare. That overcast sky is a gift: low light keeps the bait tucked in tight and the Chinook actively hunting rather than spooky. As the flood tide pushes through the Passage, it stacks the baitfish and pins them against the current lines, and the Chinook know exactly where to set up.
How We're Fishing It
We're running gear deep and slow to stay in the strike zone. Glow spoons and glow hoochies down around the 100 to 120 foot mark have been doing the damage, worked behind a flasher to pull fish in from a distance. On a grey, flat day like today, that touch of glow makes all the difference. The soft NW breeze keeps us positioned nicely without having to fight the boat, and the flat water means we can hold our depth precisely โ which matters a lot when the fish are hugging a specific band.
What to Expect This Week
Retention is 2 Chinook per angler per day, minimum 62cm, so there's real opportunity to bring home a cooler full of prime winter fillets. With settled conditions and resident fish moving through the inside waters and toward Johnstone Strait, this week is shaping up to be a strong stretch of consistent action. These calm, overcast mornings are prime time, and they don't last forever this time of year.
