Fishing Storie Charters โ€” Winter Chinook fishing in Campbell River, BC

What You'll Walk Into This Morning

Climb aboard with us this week and here's your first impression: a hushed, 6ยฐC morning with fog hanging low over the water and a gentle NW breeze at just 8 km/h barely stirring the surface. Wave height is sitting at a dead-flat 0.0m โ€” the kind of glassy calm that makes Discovery Passage feel like a mirror. You'll have your coffee in hand, rods going out, and the only sound will be the gulls and the hum of the downriggers dropping.

Why Winter Chinook Are On the Chew

Right now the target is resident winter Chinook running 8 to 15 lbs, and they're exactly where we want them โ€” tucked into Discovery Passage and the protected inside waters around Campbell River. These are local fish that stay here through the colder months feeding on bait, which means they're hungry, aggressive, and willing to bite even on a slow, foggy morning. We're fishing the morning slack as it slides into the flood, that soft tide transition that gets the bait moving and the Chinook following right behind.

How We're Catching Them

This is downrigger territory. We're running glow spoons and bait deep, working the bottom structure and the bait balls where these fish are holding. On a foggy, low-light morning like today, the glow gear earns its keep โ€” that little bit of shine down at depth is often what triggers the grab. We'll adjust depth through the tide and keep the gear in the strike zone. When one of these chrome winter fish hits, you'll feel it. Retention is 2 per day with a 62cm minimum, so there's a real chance to bring dinner home.

What to Expect This Week

Conditions are shaping up nicely for anyone stepping aboard. The calm, settled weather means comfortable fishing even for first-timers, and the resident Chinook bite in the Passage has been steady. Whether you're a seasoned angler or bringing the family out for their first saltwater trip, this is a forgiving, rewarding time of year. Johnstone Strait and the Discovery Passage corridor are producing, and the scenery alone โ€” misty mountains, calm water, maybe an eagle overhead โ€” is worth the trip.
