Discovery Passage Is Stacking Winter Chinook on a Glassy Flood
Resident winter Chinook are stacked and feeding in Discovery Passage on a glassy 0.0m flood โ glow spoons deep are the ticket.
Where the Fish Are Holding Today
Discovery Passage is the place to be this morning. The resident winter Chinook are tucked into the inside waters right along our doorstep in Campbell River, and they're feeding hard on the bait that funnels through the Passage. These aren't migratory fish on the move โ they're local residents hunkered down and chasing herring, which means they stay put and feed consistently once you find the right depth. That's exactly the kind of fishery we love this time of year.
Conditions on the Water
It's a soft, quiet start out there. We've got 8ยฐC air, foggy skies, and a barely-there NW breeze at just 2 km/h. Wave height is sitting flat at 0.0m โ about as glassy as it gets. We're working the morning slack into the flood, and that tide transition is prime time for parking over the Chinook as the current starts to build and push the bait around. Fog can make navigation deliberate, but it also tends to keep fish comfortable and feeding near the surface structure longer into the morning.
Technique That's Working
With winter Chinook holding deep in Discovery Passage, we're running glow spoons and anchovy in a teaser head down near the bottom contours where the bait is stacking. These fish respond well to a slow, methodical presentation โ glow finishes are earning bites in the low light and fog. We'll be adjusting depth through the flood to stay right on them. Expect fish in that 8 to 15 lb range, which pull hard and eat well. Retention is 2 per day with a 62cm minimum, so there's a real shot at taking home dinner.
What Guests Can Expect This Week
If the calm, foggy pattern holds, we're set up for some excellent inside-water days. Discovery Passage keeps producing because the resident Chinook simply don't leave โ they overwinter here and feed through the cold months. That consistency makes this one of the most reliable fisheries on the coast right now. Dress warm, bring a thermos, and let us put you on these hard-fighting winter kings in the flat, quiet waters off Campbell River.
