Step Aboard This Week: Boiling Coho on a Clear 6°C Slack
Clear skies, a calm 6°C slack into flood, and bait balls boiling inshore have peak coho and chum firing in Discovery Passage.
What You'll Experience On The Water This Week
Picture this: you step aboard just as the sun breaks over Discovery Passage, the air crisp at 6°C, the water laid out almost glassy with a wave height of barely 0.1m. A light NW breeze at 11 km/h keeps things comfortable, and the morning slack is just beginning to tip into the flood. Within minutes of leaving the dock, you're watching bait balls boil on the surface and coho slashing through them. That's the show waiting for you right now.
Coho And Chum At Peak
The coho run is absolutely firing. We're into fresh, chrome fish in the 10-to-15 lb class, and they're stacked tight to the inshore structure. Alongside them, chum salmon are rolling through in strong numbers, giving every angler a shot at a bend in the rod. Both species are at their peak together, and that overlap doesn't last long. When conditions line up like this — clear skies, calm seas, a building flood — the fishing can be nothing short of spectacular.
Dialing In The Technique
With the flood coming on after slack, we'll be working the inshore edges where the bait is holding. Bucktails skated shallow are drawing explosive surface strikes from aggressive coho, while spoons run a touch deeper will pick off the fish holding below the bait balls. The chum are happy to chase a flashy presentation too. The light NW wind and flat water make for easy bait reading, so we can stay on the fish as they move with the tide through Discovery Passage toward Johnstone Strait.
Dress For Fall, Reap The Reward
Make no mistake, this is fall fishing. That 6°C start means layers, a warm toque, and a good rain shell in the bag even on a clear morning. But for those willing to handle a little chill, the payoff is some of the best salmon action Campbell River serves up all year. The inshore spots are loaded, the fish are chrome-bright, and the crowds thin out as the season winds down.
