Time the Flood Right: Best Coho Windows Through the Slack
Peak coho in the 10-15 lb range are firing on the slack-to-flood turn in Campbell River, with chum and late Chinook adding variety.
Today's Tide Timing Sets the Table
Good morning from Campbell River. The clock is your best friend today, and the story starts with the water. We're rolling out of a morning slack into a building flood, and that transition is exactly when the coho switch on. As the tide begins to push, bait gets moving through Discovery Passage, and those aggressive silvers line up in the current seams to ambush it. If you only fish one window today, make it the hour on either side of that slack-to-flood turn — that's your prime bite.
Conditions Are Working in Our Favour
It's a crisp 10°C out there with partly cloudy skies overhead, giving us just enough light without flattening the bite. NW winds are light at 10 km/h, and the water is laying down beautifully with wave height around 0.3m. That's comfortable, fishable water for working the tide lines and shorelines, and it makes for an easy morning on the deck for guests of all experience levels.
Coho Are Peaking — and They're Hungry
The coho run is at its full peak right now, with fish in the 10 to 15 pound class charging through. These are aggressive, hard-fighting salmon that love a fast presentation. Bucktail flies skipped along the surface will draw explosive strikes, and green spoons run down around 40 feet are producing steadily. Don't be shy with your trolling speed — coho want to chase. On top of the silvers, chum salmon are showing up in good numbers and there are still late Chinook holding around, so there's plenty of variety to keep rods bent.
What to Expect This Week
With the coho at their peak, this is prime time to be on the water. Expect steady action through the flooding tides, aggressive surface takes on the fly gear, and the chance to tangle with a chunky late Chinook or a fresh chum. The lighter winds and flat conditions we're seeing today should hold nicely, making Discovery Passage and the approaches toward Johnstone Strait fish exceptionally well. This kind of window doesn't last long — coho season is a sprint, not a marathon.
