Chase the Morning Flood: Peak Coho Windows on Today's Tide
Time your morning to the slack-into-flood window and cash in on peaking 10–15 lb coho, arriving chum, and late Chinook in calm, flat water.
Timing Is Everything on Today's Tide
Good morning from Campbell River. If there's one thing that will make or break your day on the water right now, it's timing your run to match the tide. We're working a morning slack rolling into the flood today, and that transition window is exactly when the coho light up. Get your gear in the water as the current starts to push and you'll be sitting right in the sweet spot.
Conditions are as clean as they come out here. We've got 9°C with partly cloudy skies, a light NW breeze at just 8 km/h, and wave heights sitting near flat at roughly 0.0m. That's textbook coho water — calm enough to spot the fish working the surface and comfortable enough to fish hard all morning.
Coho Are Peaking and They're Aggressive
The coho are the stars of the show right now, running 10 to 15 pounds and absolutely on the chew. These are big-shouldered, aggressive fish that love to smash surface flies and spoons. When the flood kicks in through Discovery Passage, watch the tide lines where bait gets pushed together — that's where the coho stack up and hunt. Green and glow spoons are moving fish consistently, and don't be shy about running a fly on top when you see them showing.
Beyond the coho, the chum are starting to arrive in good numbers, adding another hard-pulling option to the mix. There are still late Chinook around too, so you've got a genuine shot at a mixed bag on any given morning. It's the kind of variety that keeps every drift interesting.
What to Expect This Week
With coho at their peak and chum pushing in, this is one of the best windows of the season to be aboard. The forecast calm and light NW winds should hold the fishing solid through the coming days. Fish the tide changes, stay tight to the current seams in Discovery Passage, and be ready for that reaction bite when the flood turns on. Johnstone Strait is also worth a look if we go hunting for concentrated schools.
These peak coho days don't last long, and the calendar is filling fast. If you want to time your trip to the best bite windows while the fish are stacked and hungry, now is the time to get on the books. Give us a shout and let's get you into some of the finest coho fishing Campbell River has to offer this fall.
