NW Breeze at 11 km/h and Flat Water: Prime Coho Conditions

Flat water and a light NW breeze set up prime coho fishing on the slack-to-flood window, with chum and late chinook adding variety.

Fishing Storie Charters — Coho fishing in Campbell River, BC

Today's Conditions on Discovery Passage

We've woken up to a classic September morning here in Campbell River. It's sitting at 12°C under partly cloudy skies, with a light NW wind at just 11 km/h and wave heights barely nudging 0.2m. That's about as clean as it gets out on the water. We're working the morning slack rolling into the flood, and that transition is exactly the window you want your line down. When the tide starts to build and the current pushes bait through Discovery Passage, the coho light up.

Coho Are Peaking

The star of the show right now is coho, and they're in the 10 to 15 lb range this week. These are aggressive, athletic fish that love to chase, which makes them an absolute blast to target. With the flat water and manageable wind today, surface presentations are coming into their own. Coho will crash a spoon or a fly worked up high in the water column, and on glassy conditions like these you can often watch the strike happen right at the surface. That's the kind of action that keeps everyone on board grinning.

Chum and Late Chinook in the Mix

Coho aren't the only players. Chum salmon are arriving now, adding some serious muscle to the mix, and there are still late chinook holding around the passage. That gives us a nice variety on any given trip, so if the coho go quiet through a tide change, there's usually a backup plan swimming nearby. Working a range of depths keeps you in contact with whatever's feeding.

Technique for Today

Keep your spoons and flies fishing shallow to mid-column while the coho are up top. Bright green and chrome patterns have been drawing plenty of attention. Time your effort around that slack-to-flood window and stay ready — coho don't hesitate, and the hits come hard. As the flood builds through Discovery Passage and toward Johnstone Strait, expect the bite to stay lively.

What to Expect This Week

With the coho run at full peak and chum pushing in behind them, the fishing should stay strong right through the coming days. Calm forecasts and cooperative fish make for the kind of week you don't want to miss. If you've been thinking about getting out on the water, now is the time. Book your trip with Fishing Storie Charters and let's put you on some hard-charging Campbell River coho.
