The bite has been firing hardest on the flood, and today we're keying in on that moving water. Get lines wet during the flood change and the first couple hours of push — that's when the coho stack up, chase bait, and turn aggressive. The slack window is your travel time; the flood is your fish time.

Conditions on Discovery Passage

Weather data is offline this morning, but early September in Discovery Passage typically hands us calm, glassy mornings with light NW winds building to 10–15 knots by afternoon. Expect small chop under a foot on the flood, water temps hovering around 12–14°C, and that classic mix of sun and marine cloud. It's prime coho weather — comfortable, fishable, and the kind of day that keeps the whole boat smiling.

What's Running and Why

Coho are absolutely peaking right now, and these 10–15 lb fish are a blast. They're aggressive, fast, and love to hunt near the surface. On top of that, chum salmon are just starting to arrive, adding a hard-pulling bonus to the mix, and late Chinook are still holding in the deeper edges for anyone who wants to bottom-bounce a spoon.

Techniques That Are Working

For coho, keep it high and flashy. Surface flies and bright spoons fished in the top 40 feet are drawing savage strikes. Speed up your troll a touch — coho want to chase. Green, chartreuse, and glow patterns have been the ticket. If you want to tangle with a late Chinook, drop a glow spoon down 80–90 feet along the Quadra shoreline and Discovery Passage bait balls. Chum will hit smaller flashy gear as they filter through toward Johnstone Strait.
