This is the report we wait all year to write. Right now the fish are stacking through Discovery Passage in numbers, and the size class showing up is turning heads. Most Chinook are running in that reliable 12-16 lb range, but this is the season's best window for a genuine trophy 30-35 lb Tyee, and the bigger fish are prowling the bait balls hard. Layer in peaking Coho at 12-16 lbs and steady Pink Salmon action, and August 29 might be the most varied day of fishing you'll see all season.

Today's Conditions on the Water

We're looking at 10°C this morning under partly cloudy skies, with light NW winds at just 9 km/h and wave heights sitting flat at essentially 0.0m. That's about as calm and comfortable as Campbell River gets. We're working the morning slack into the flood, and that tide change is exactly when the bite fires up. Calm water means easy spotting of bait activity and gulls working the surface — a dead giveaway for where the Chinook are holding underneath.

What's Working

Focus your effort around the tide change. As the slack rolls into flood, big Chinook move up onto the bait and feed aggressively. Glow spoons run deep and anchovy up high have both been producing, so cover the water column until you find the size class you're after. Coho are willing higher in the water and love a bit of speed, while the Tyee-class Chinook reward patience and precise depth control near the schools of bait.

Chinook retention is open, so guests are keeping and taking home fish — one per day, between 62cm and 80cm. With the trophy class showing up and Coho peaking, expect a mixed bag and plenty of bent rods.
