Today's Conditions on Discovery Passage
We're looking at a beautiful setup out here this morning — 14°C air, partly cloudy skies, and a light NW wind at just 11 km/h. The water is close to dead flat at roughly 0.1m, which is exactly the kind of glassy surface we love for spotting bait activity and working our gear clean through the tide lines. We're rolling out of morning slack and into the flood, and that transition is when the fish really wake up in Discovery Passage.
What's Running and Why
Chinook are still biting hard, and that flood push is loading the passage with fish. Most of what we're putting in the box sits in the 12-16 lb range, but August is prime time — this is the season's best window for a trophy 30+ lb Tyee to show up on the rod. Coho are peaking right now too, running a healthy 12-16 lbs with the odd bruiser mixed in. Add pinks to the equation and this is honestly one of the best months of the year for sheer variety off Campbell River.
Technique for Today
On calm, clear water like this, keep your presentation tidy. Anchovy in the shallower zone is drawing strikes, while glow hootchies run deeper are producing when the light is flat under the clouds. Work the tide lines and bait balls as the flood builds — the first couple hours of moving water are where the magic happens. If you mark bait, slow down and stay on it.

Retention is open, and guests are taking Chinook home — the limit is one per day, minimum 62cm and maximum 80cm, so we release the true trophies to keep the run strong.
