Timing Is Everything Right Now

If there's one thing to nail this week off Campbell River, it's your tide window. The Chinook bite is turning on hard through the early flood, and the first two hours of pushing water have been the money zone. We've been getting guests on the water for the dawn slack, then working the building tide as bait stacks up and the big fish start feeding. Get out early — that morning window is where the magic happens.

Typical Late-July Conditions

Late July in Discovery Passage usually delivers those calm, glassy mornings we love, with a light northwest breeze filling in by midday. Expect flat water at first light, gradually building to a gentle chop as the afternoon wind picks up. Surface temperatures are warm and comfortable, and the long summer daylight gives us plenty of room to work multiple tide changes. It's about as good as it gets for putting clients on fish.

Trophy Tyee Season Is In Full Swing

This is it — the best fishing of the year. Chinook retention has been OPEN since July 15, and trophy season is firing on all cylinders. Most fish coming over the rails are solid 12–16 pounders, but this is the time of year we get our best shot at a genuine 30–35 lb Tyee-class Chinook. Every rod that goes down could be the big one. Remember the DFO rules: one Chinook per person per day, with a slot of minimum 62cm and maximum 80cm, so we're releasing the true giants to keep spawning — but you'll go home with dinner and a story either way.

Technique and Supporting Species

We're running anchovy and glow hootchies down deep along the Quadra shorelines and through Discovery Passage, adjusting depth as the bait moves with the tide. Coho are showing well up top and smashing surface gear — great action for the whole boat between Chinook passes. Pink salmon are also around in good numbers, keeping rods bent when the big kings go quiet. Johnstone Strait continues to funnel fresh fish down to us daily.
