We're moving off morning slack and into the flood — and that's exactly the window we want. When Discovery Passage lays down glassy like this and the flood starts pushing bait through, the big Chinook come up to feed. There's no better setup than a calm morning tide during trophy season.

What's Running and Why

Trophy Tyee Chinook are the headliner, and retention has been OPEN since July 15. Most fish crossing the rail right now are solid 12–16 pounders, but make no mistake — this is the best stretch of the entire year to tangle with a genuine 30-plus pound Tyee-class Chinook. That flood tide funnels bait tight against the Quadra shorelines and through Discovery Passage, and the heavyweights are staging to ambush it. Coho are stacking in too and hitting surface gear hard, with Pink Salmon rounding out plenty of action to keep the rods bent between the big bites.

Technique for the Bite

On glassy mornings like this, get anchovy in the water shallow — 40 to 50 feet — where Chinook are pushing bait toward the surface. If the sun climbs and the fish drop, put glow hootchies down deep to stay on them. For Coho, keep something up top; they're aggressive right now and love a fast surface presentation. Slow your troll on the flood and stay tight to the structure where the current does the work.

A quick reminder on the rules: Chinook retention is one per day, minimum 62cm and maximum 80cm, so you can take a beautiful fish home for the table.
