Glassy Conditions and Fish on the Move

Conditions couldn't be much better this morning. We're looking at 18°C, clear skies, and light NW winds at just 7 km/h with a flat, glassy surface sitting around 0.0m of wave height. That kind of calm makes for comfortable running and easy spotting of bait balls and working birds through the Passage. When the water lays down like this, presentation matters, and the fish are less spooky.

Trophy Chinook in Full Swing

Chinook retention opened July 15 and trophy season is absolutely live. Most fish crossing the rail are running 12–16 lbs, but this is the best stretch of the year for a shot at a genuine Tyee-class fish in the 30–35 lb range. Remember the rules: one Chinook per person per day, minimum 62cm, maximum 80cm. Beyond the Chinook, Coho are chewing on surface gear and Pink Salmon are stacking up, so there's rarely a dull moment between big-fish encounters.

Technique Notes

We're running anchovy and hootchies through the mid-water column and adjusting depth as the flood builds. Coho are up top hitting flashier surface presentations, so if the Chinook bite slows we'll bump gear shallow and keep rods bent. The key today is being set up and fishing hard through that slack-to-flood transition — the window is short but it produces.
