Time the Tide, Land the Fish

Good morning from Campbell River. If there's one thing to nail down this week, it's your timing. The best Chinook action right now is coming on the tide changes, and the early-morning window has been the money maker. Get lines wet before first light and fish through the top of the flood — that low-light, moving-water combination in Discovery Passage is when these Chinook light up. A second solid bite often shows on the afternoon tide shift, so there's more than one shot at a good day.

Conditions on the Water

Typical mid-July conditions are holding — mild summer mornings, light northwest winds that tend to build a little through the afternoon in Discovery Passage, and generally calm, fishable seas with only a light chop when the wind and tide line up against each other. Water temps are sitting comfortably in the summer range, and the early starts mean glassy conditions before the breeze fills in. Dress in layers; it's cool at dawn and warms up fast once the sun clears the mountains.

What's Running and Why

Chinook are the main event. Fish are pushing through Discovery Passage in good numbers, with most in that 12–16 lb class and trophy-class fish in the 30–35 lb range showing up more and more as we roll toward Tyee season. Right now Chinook are strictly catch-and-release — but here's the news everyone's been waiting for: the DFO retention opener is TOMORROW, July 15. One more sleep. Meanwhile, the first early Coho are just starting to trickle in, adding a little bonus to the mix.

Techniques That Are Working

Trolling anchovy in a glow teaser head or a green-and-glow spoon down 60–120 feet has been dependable, especially on that moving tide. Slow your speed on the tide changes and stay tight to the bait balls. For the bigger fish, a bit of patience and heavier gear pays off when a trophy-class Chinook decides to test your drag.

Book Your Seat

This is the week to be on the water. Trophy Chinook are building, Coho are arriving, and the retention opener lands tomorrow — the calendar and the fish are lining up perfectly. Boats are filling fast around the opener, so lock in your dates now and let's put you on a Discovery Passage Chinook to remember.
