Fishing Storie Charters — Chinook (catch & release — retention opens July 15, 2 days away!) fishing in Campbell River, BC

Conditions on the Water

Good morning from Campbell River. We're waking up to a classic west coast summer day — 12°C, overcast skies, and light NW winds at just 8 km/h. The water is glassy calm out there with wave heights sitting near flat, and we're working a morning slack transitioning into the flood tide. These are prime conditions: soft light and gentle current get those big fish feeding, and the flat water makes for a comfortable, productive day on the boat.

What's Running and Why

The star of the show right now is Chinook, and they are moving through Discovery Passage in solid numbers. Most fish are running in that 12–16 lb range, but here's the exciting part — we're seeing more and more trophy-class fish in the 30–35 lb class as we edge toward Tyee season. Those big migratory salmon are stacking up and staging, and every day the odds of hooking a giant get a little better. On top of that, early Coho are just starting to show, adding some fun variety to the mix.

A quick and important note: Chinook is catch and release only until July 15 — that's just two days away. We're running exciting catch-and-release Chinook action right now, and the retention opener is right around the corner. If you've been waiting for the green light to bring one home, this is the week to be on the water.

Technique Hints

With the flood building through Discovery Passage, we're working anchovies in glow teaser heads and running flashers at various depths to find the strike zone. The overcast skies mean fish are willing to come up a little shallower than on bright days, so don't be afraid to fish higher in the column. For the early Coho, a faster troll and lighter presentation is turning heads.

What to Expect This Week

Expect steady Chinook action through Discovery Passage and toward the mouth of Johnstone Strait, with the very real chance at a trophy fish. As we cross into July 15, retention opens and the energy on the water is going to be electric. This is the sweet spot — big fish, calm seas, and a fishery ramping up fast.
