Peak Chinook Smashing Lines in Discovery Passage Right Now
Peak Chinook are smashing lines in Discovery Passage with trophy 30-pounders in the mix and early Coho showing on the edges.
Saturday Morning on the Water
We rolled out of Campbell River this morning to about as good as it gets — 13°C, clear skies, and a light NW breeze at 12 km/h barely ruffling the surface. With wave heights sitting around 0.2m, Discovery Passage is glass-calm and fishable from the first light right through the morning slack into the flood. These are the conditions every guide dreams about, and the fish are cooperating.
Peak Chinook Are Here
This is the heart of peak Chinook season, and the action has been outstanding. We're seeing solid 12 to 16 pound fish hitting hard, and there's a very real shot at a trophy 30 to 35 pounder pulling drag and putting your gear to the test. Just a heads-up — Chinook is catch and release only until July 15 under DFO regulation, so right now it's all about the fight, the photos, and the memory of watching a big spring kick off into the depths of the Passage. Early Coho are also starting to show along the edges, adding a little extra spice to the day.
Technique Hints
With the morning slack moving into a flood, we've been trolling glow and green hootchies and anchovy in a teaser head down deep, working the structure where the tide funnels bait. Pay attention to your sounder — find the bait balls and the Chinook won't be far behind. Slowing your troll on the slack and varying your depth has been the ticket to triggering those bigger fish. The clear water means presentation matters, so keep your gear sharp and your flashers clean.
What to Expect This Week
The forecast looks stable, and with the tides building we expect the Chinook bite to stay strong through Discovery Passage and into Johnstone Strait. Bring your camera, your sense of adventure, and be ready for a rod-bending battle. Catch and release Chinook action this time of year is some of the most exciting fishing on the entire BC coast.
