Peak Chinook Smashing Lures in Discovery Passage
Peak Chinook are crushing lures in Discovery Passage with trophy potential, while early Coho show on the edges — catch and release until July 15.
Conditions on the Water
What a morning to be out here in Campbell River. We're looking at 13°C, clear skies, and a light NW wind at 12 km/h keeping the water nice and manageable with wave heights barely tickling 0.2m. We're working that morning slack rolling into the flood tide, which is exactly the window you want when the big Chinook start moving through Discovery Passage. Glassy water, good light, and fish on the chew — this is what we live for.
What's Running and Why
It's peak Chinook season, folks, and the fish know it. We're hooking solid 12 to 16 pounders consistently, and there's a very real chance at a trophy 30 to 35 lb beast this time of year as the bigger schools push through Discovery Passage and down toward Johnstone Strait. These fish are hitting hard and fighting harder. Just a reminder per DFO regulation: Chinook is catch and release only until July 15, so we're releasing every one of these slabs — but the action is absolutely electric and the photos speak for themselves. On top of that, early Coho are starting to show on the edges, adding a fun bonus to the day.
Technique Hints
With the Chinook holding deeper, we're running glow and green-spatterback spoons and anchovy in teaser heads behind flashers, working the 60 to 120 foot range along the bait balls. Pay attention to your downrigger depth as the tide builds — these fish stack up where the current funnels the bait. For the early Coho on the surface edges, a slightly shallower presentation with a faster troll has been drawing strikes. Sharp hooks and a smooth drag are everything when a trophy hits.
What to Expect This Week
The forecast is holding steady, so we're expecting more of the same — strong numbers of catch and release Chinook, plenty of screaming reels, and a good shot at a true trophy. Bring layers for the cool mornings and a camera for the hero shots before we send these fish back.
