With calm seas, light NW winds, and a morning slack transitioning into flood tide, we're seeing consistent action on fish ranging from 15–25 lbs. The water is cooperating beautifully, and the Chinook are filling out nicely as we head into late May.
What's Running This Week
Spring Chinook remain our primary target, and the catch & release opportunity is world-class right now. While retention doesn't open until July 15, the sheer volume and quality of fish on the bite makes every outing exceptional. Supporting that action, Lingcod opened May 1st and they're aggressive and hungry—creating genuine double-header potential on many days. Expect to tangle with solid Lingcod in the 8–15 lb range alongside your Chinook encounters.
Techniques & Tactics
Success hinges on working the slack-to-flood transition through Johnstone Strait and the passage itself. Live herring presentations near the deeper edges are producing consistent strikes. Jigging heavy spoons in the current breaks is equally effective for Lingcod. The key is staying mobile and following the baitfish—where the herring schools congregate, the predators follow. Morning sessions are prime, but afternoon flood tides are firing too.
