Mitlenatch Island is a provincial nature reserve in the Strait of Georgia, known for its seabird colonies, marine life, and rugged beauty. It’s one of the best spots near Campbell River for wildlife viewing and coastal photography.
Expect to see hundreds of seabirds like glaucous-winged gulls, pelagic cormorants, pigeon guillemots, oystercatchers, and bald eagles. You may also spot harbor seals, sea lions, and occasionally humpback whales or porpoises along the way.
Tours typically run 3 1/2-4 hours, giving you plenty of time to circle the island, observe wildlife, and take photographs. Travel time from Campbell River is about 45–60 minutes each way depending on weather.
No — landing on the island is restricted to protect its fragile ecosystem. However, our boat allows for close-up viewing along the shoreline, ideal for birdwatching and scenic photography.
Mitlenatch is located in a rain shadow, meaning it’s much drier than the surrounding coast. This creates a desert-like climate supporting rare plant and bird species not found elsewhere in the region.
Dress in layers and bring a good camera, binoculars, snacks, and sun protection. We’ll provide safety equipment, life jackets, and narration from your local guide.
Absolutely. Mitlenatch Island is one of the top birding destinations in British Columbia, offering incredible vantage points from the boat for nesting seabirds and dramatic shoreline views.
Generally no. We plan trips during good weather windows and travel in a safe, stable 17' Boston Whaler, ideal for coastal exploring and wildlife observation.
Yes — private group tours can be arranged for photographers, research groups, or those looking for a more flexible schedule or specific focus like birds or marine mammals.
We combine deep local knowledge, top-tier equipment, and a passion for sharing BC’s coastal beauty. Our Mitlenatch Island Tour offers a unique, intimate way to experience one of Vancouver Island’s hidden ecological treasures.
