FSC Daily Fishing Report - Wednesday, July 15, 2026
A Campbell River fishing charter delivered a fast Coho salmon morning on flat calm Discovery Passage — 23 fish on the line for a first-time father-and-son crew from Toronto, capped by a chrome-bright 7-pounder.
Conditions Report: Wednesday, July 15, 2026
Some summer mornings on Discovery Passage feel almost too easy. Today was one. The sun broke over the water at 5:28 AM, the air warmed to 23°C, and the wind — all of one knot from the ENE — never bothered to show up. Visibility ran a clean 10km with just a soft haze on the far mountains, and the Passage laid down flat as a table.
The tide worked in our favour. High water of 12.8 feet came at 5:52 AM and began its long slide toward a 1.4-foot low at 1:28 PM. Slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows landed at 7:00 AM, and as the water began to move, the fishing came alive. Out in Johnstone Strait the forecast promised NW 20 to 30 knots later in the day, but the morning gave us a wide, calm window and we made the most of it.
The Catch
Captain Bruce ran the early trip aboard the 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk with Stephen and his father, first-time anglers up from Toronto on a father-and-son fishing and golf adventure. We set up at the green can and trolled Tomic plugs at a shade over two knots, downriggers down 80 to 120 feet. The water read a warm 17.9°C, which had the Coho up and aggressive.
They came willing and they came often. Off that 7:00 AM slack the rods started firing and barely stopped. By the end of the morning the crew had 23 fish on the line — four kept and nineteen released — topped by a chrome-bright seven-pounder, silver and cold, fins intact. With the new moon and an Excellent solunar rating, the timing could not have been better.
What's Running in July
Midsummer is prime Coho season around Campbell River, and this year's fish are chrome and feisty. Chinook are also in the mix, running a typical 12 to 16 pounds with a chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder. Note the DFO Area 13 Chinook slot from July 15: one per day, 62 to 80cm, with anything over 80cm released to protect the run. Coho remain a strong daily target. Warm water this time of year keeps fish shallower and active — perfect for newcomers.
