Conditions Report: August 11, 2026
Some summer mornings hand you everything. This was one of them. Captain Trevor pushed off from Coast Marina A Dock on the 6am departure under a broken-cloud sky, air temp already sitting at 20°C. Wind was barely there — ENE at 2 knots, gusting to 5 — and visibility ran a clean 10km across a deep blue-green Discovery Passage.
The water matched the sky. Seas a metre or less, just a light ripple, flat and easy for two first-time anglers. The marine forecast promised NW winds building to 20 knots later with fog banks moving in overnight, but for the morning window we had glass. Tides worked our way, too — the water was falling toward the 11:08 AM low, and at Seymour Narrows the current was easing toward the 10:43 AM slack before flood, running only about a knot. That softening current is prime time, pushing bait through the passage and putting fish on the feed.
The Catch
We kept it simple and proven: hoochies — plastic squid lures — trailed behind flashers, run down to 200ft on the downriggers in the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. The Purple truck hoochie did the heavy lifting, dragged slow at Chinook speed. Water temp read a warm 18°C, and the fish were active.
Six fish came to the boat over the morning — two kept, four released. The standout was a chrome bright 18-pounder that rose up silver and clean, fresh from the salt, fins intact. The rest were solid 12-16 lb feeders, the everyday reward of a Campbell River summer. The waning crescent moon carried a Good solunar rating, with the major feeding window running 9:29 to 11:29 AM — lined up neatly with the tide change. Adam and Paige, both new to it, walked off the dock grinning.
What's Running in August
August is Chinook country in Campbell River. Feeder Chinook average 12-16 lbs this time of year, with a real chance at a trophy over 30 pounds if the day breaks your way. Coho start showing more as summer rolls on. Under DFO Area 13 regulations, Chinook from July 15 to August 31 run a 62-80cm slot — one per day, and anything over 80cm goes back to keep the run strong. That's exactly why the bigger fish today were released.
